You might have read the title to this blog and thought, “How could someone not know how to operate their own sprinkler system?”  If you have ever moved into a house with a pre-existing sprinkler system and no directions, then you know exactly how it’s possible!  Most people consider a built-in sprinkler system to be a “plus” when buying a home.  But, when you aren’t the person who had it installed and received instructions from the installer, then you may have no idea how to operate it!

Manual Sprinkler Valve

Does your sprinkler system only have a manual valve to operate it or does it have a control box which allows you to set timers and zones for your yard?  If it is a manual-only operation, then you will probably figure it out on your own.  The manual valve should be located near the main hose bib, usually located in the front of the house.

Irrigation Controller

If you have an irrigation controller, or sprinkler timer system, then you may need some professional help.  First, you have to locate the control box (it’s usually located in the garage).  You will want to find this prior to moving in if possible so that you don’t put something in front of it that blocks it.  Planting shrubs or putting a heavy shelving unit in front of the control box will make your life more difficult!  It may take more snooping around the garage than you expect.  The irrigation control system could be located anywhere in the garage, and some people have them installed inside a built-in cabinet.

If the previous owners have not left an instruction manual for you, then you may want to try to download or order one online.  Even if you do this, it could be difficult to understand.  You may, at this point, want to call in a professional sprinkler installer who can instruct you on the type of irrigation system you have and help you program your control box for your yard’s specific watering needs.

Sprinkler Installation in Brevard County, FL

If you have bought a home with a built-in sprinkler system, then we highly suggest that you contact a professional sprinkler installation company to come out and evaluate your system.  Let them look for any leaks, as well as any sprinkler heads or valves that need repairing or replacing.  And, definitely ask them to teach you how to use your irrigation control system if you have one.  Don’t be embarrassed to take notes or label switches on the control box to make it easier for you to use.
